01 — The story
Beaujolais Nouveau is the first wine released from each new vintage. Made quickly from freshly harvested Gamay grapes, it is bottled only weeks after picking—vivid, fruit-forward and intended to be enjoyed young.
What began as a local tradition among growers became a worldwide ritual. At midnight on the third Thursday of November, the cry goes up—Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivé!
Gamay Noir has thin, delicate purple-black skins and grows in compact, cylindrical bunches. Early-ripening and naturally expressive, it creates supple, refreshing wines with bright cherry, raspberry and wild-strawberry flavours, gentle tannins and occasional floral or spicy notes.
Beaujolais Nouveau was first commercialised in 1951, giving growers a way to share the young wine soon after harvest. After years of changing release dates, a 1985 decree fixed its sale to the third Thursday of November—creating the annual midnight celebration recognised around the world.
A historic winegrowing region north of Lyon, Beaujolais is a landscape of sunlit slopes and varied soils. Granite, sand and clay-limestone give Gamay different expressions, from light and exuberantly fruity to structured, floral and complex. Its red wines are made almost entirely from Gamay.
